How to Deal when Social Media Perfectionism Gets You Down

Do you ever feel overwhelming competing with the demands that social media, and other things, put on you sometimes?

Although you can’t see me, I’m emphatically waving my hand over here! Have the perfect vacation. Raise the perfect smiling children taking part in perfect extra-curricular activities. Get a bigger house. Buy more things, be skinnier, and on and on. Logging on to social media sites like Instagram or Pinterest can leave me exhausted, feeling like I just can’t compete – or keep up!

I’m not perfect. I admit that. And you know what? It’s so freeing to own that. Why? Because perfection is an unattainable standard.

No matter how hard you try, and try, and try, it will never be good enough – for yourself or the people who pressure you to be perfect like them when perfection is the standard. You’ll live your life feeling less than instead of full of unique ability, love, peace, and strength.

When I let go of keeping up with others and instead embraced my own challenges, something opened up. My favorite people are the ones that are open about their struggles, about how hard parenting can be, about how hard work can be, about how hard following the rules of the pandemic can be. The You Spark isn’t about being perfect – it’s about being you – and using that good, unique part of you to help yourself and others.

Set Your Own Standard

So decide to set your own standard. Stop giving your power away. Don’t live your friend’s life, your sister’s, your mom’s, your partner’s, or your Instagram feed’s. Don’t let them tell you want to want, do, and/or be. Do what YOU want, be who YOU are, achieve YOUR dreams, do what YOU know is right based on your own values.

How do you do this? A good way is to think about the kind of person you want to BE instead of what you want to have.

Start reconnecting with yourself with these journal prompts. By the end, you’ll have a new filter through which to see your life.
